40 x 40 - 15. Catch a Steelhead

The first weekend of March marked our 3rd annual Women with Bait fishing trip.  This four-day trip to Riggins, Idaho includes two full days in the car, one full day of fishing, and one night of a lot of drinking!

Our trip out of town on Thursday was delayed due to a weather front that decided to dump a half of foot of snow the night before.  Lucky for us, this weather front only lasted for about the first 90 miles and then it was smooth sailing.  It still took us ten hours to get to Riggins, plus loosing an hour of time due to a time change.  We wouldn’t arrive at the rental house until almost 10:00pm.

Friday morning came early.

We had to meet our fishing guide and bait boy before the sun even came up.  It was ok though because we had a long day ahead of us on the river.  There were fish to be caught, just waiting for us.

After a very long morning of no one hooking anything, we landed a couple of steelhead.  Unfortunately, they were native and we had to throw them back; not before we measured them just to make sure we didn’t have the tournament winner.

It’s amazing to me how you can stand in one spot, watching the end of your fishing pole, not thinking about anything for twenty minutes.  Now I understand why people get into fishing.

Soon, I would feel a tug at the end of my line.

I was in for a fight.  This big boy was not going to come willingly.

I was bound and determined to win this fight.

I knew it was going to be good when the bait boy got excited.  We would chase this fish all around the back of the boat, and just before the bait boy netted him, the line broke and he swam off, with a flip of the tail.  He had won this fight today.  I honestly thought the bait boy was going to cry.  I didn’t have time to really think about it. My blood was pumping and I was ready to go again.

In the end, we would land seven fish, but only keep two.  It wasn’t the worst day of fishing.

This year we planned our trip around the final weekend of the tournament.  The tournament ended on Saturday with presentation of awards and the “fish dance”.  We were very excited about attending the fish dance.  We had been planning this part of the trip for an entire year.

Then, all the locals warned us that it was not a good idea to go to the fish dance.  They recommended that if we did go, that we all stay together and when the bar brawl started (which it inevitably would) to get out fast.  We had decided to go for just one beer and then leave.

Then the band started to play and we started to dance.

We took over the Men’s room since the Women’s was clear across the bar and it was too dangerous to walk through the crowd.

We made friends with the band.

(It was a dark and smoky bar, we were not all possessed by the devil)

We ended up staying five hours, dancing the whole time.  The best part of staying in Riggins is that the town is so small that we walked everywhere we needed to go.

I love this picture because we were all genuinely having a great time.

No, I didn’t officially catch a fish this year, but we already have our boat reserved for next year.  I will win the fight next time!

40 x 40–1. See a Professional Ballet

I know it’s been a while since I last checked in.  I thought I would let you know how my 40 x 40 list is going.  Item one on my list was to see a professional ballet.  I think I can officially cross this one off my list.

On February 4th, my niece, my sister, and I went to see the Eugene Ballet original “All You Need is Love” at the historic Elsinore Theatre in Salem. This was Georgia’s choice since February is her birthday month.

We weren’t allowed to take photos inside the ballet, so I had to steal this one from the Eugene Ballet web site.

The Historic Elsinore Theatre is amazing.  Again, my pictures didn’t do it justice, so I borrowed these from their web site.  This is basically the view that we had from our seats.

If you were on stage looking out at the audience, this is where we sat.

The ballet was so much fun!  It was upbeat and energetic.  And on top of all of it, the place next door to the theatre sold cupcakes!

A great way to end the perfect girl’s night out!
